National Museum of Scotland
Monday 2 June 2008, 9.00am–9.30am
The elephants in the National Museum of Scotland mammal hall are just some of the large mammals which have been prepared for storage during the redevelopment of part of the Museum. They have been wrapped in bubble-wrap for protection and will be available to be photographed for a short period of time on Monday morning.
Photographers are invited to photograph the bubble-wrapped elephants behind the scenes at the National Museum of Scotland.
Please note that the short timeframe must be strictly adhered to due to building schedule requirements.
Photographers should assemble at the Bristo Port (staff entrance) of the National Museum of Scotland by 9.00am when they will be escorted to the now closed area of the mammal hall.
This is part of the work already underway to empty the galleries of collections before building work starts. National Museums Scotland staff will pack and move collections to the new purpose built storage building at West Granton. Everything, from tiny insects to large reptiles and mammals in the Natural Science Galleries; fragile ceramics and glass from around the balconies; delicate textiles from the Middle East and Egyptian coffins will be relocated.
Part of the National Museum of Scotland has now closed its doors for the major redevelopment. The three year refurbishment aims to create a twenty-first century museum experience; a place where the cultures of Scotland and the world meet under one roof. The project will see storage areas transformed into public space, dated displays completely transformed and access improved throughout to create a must-see attraction.
The Museum will reopen in 2011, providing a truly world-class visitor experience with amazing treasures, increased educational facilities, new public spaces and fascinating displays.
