Detail from a wedding dress worn by Helena Bonham Carter in Frankenstein

Brides Go Free

Brides past and present will receive free entry to a new exhibition set to open at the National Museum of Costume near Dumfries this Friday 9 April, providing they arrive wearing their wedding dress.

Marriage in the Movies
9 April – 31 October 2010
National Museum of Costume, New Abbey, Dumfries

The special offer has been introduced by museum staff to spread some matrimonial spirit as they launch Marriage in the Movies at the popular attraction. A mix of Hollywood glamour, style and romance, the new exhibition features stunning wedding dresses worn by film stars including Meryl Streep, Keira Knightley, Natasha Kinsky, Joely Richardson and Helena Bonham Carter in film and television productions ranging from Pride and Prejudice and The Duchess to Mansfield Park, Tess and Frankenstein.

The costumes are used within the exhibition to show the development of the wedding dress since the 18th century and illustrate many of the fashions and styles of the periods represented on screen.

Marriage in the Movies also includes examples of wedding favours and gloves, invitations, cards and accessories and explores some of Scotland’s wedding traditions.

The exhibition also explains some of the practical considerations that today’s film costume designers have to take into account when creating clothing for the screen.

Maureen Barrie, Exhibitions Officer at National Museums Scotland said;

“The wedding dress is probably the most special item of clothing that women will wear in their lifetime. Usually they are only worn once, but we thought that our new exhibition would be the perfect opportunity for women across the country to get dressed up once more and mingle with the beautiful wedding dresses worn by the stars.”

Marriage in the Movies runs from Friday 9 April until Sunday 31 October. Anyone turning up wearing their wedding dress will receive free entry to the Museum.

Normal museum admission: Adult £4, Concession £3, Child 12 and under free.
