Telephones

National Museums Scotland collections contain a huge variety of objects and specimens. We  want to encourage wider engagement with the collections and increase opportunities for them to be seen in new venues by new audiences. The telephones shown here are all available for long or short term loan.

Hanging on the telephone

In 1978 Blondie was 'Hanging on the Telephone' and as telecommunications progressed into the 1980s phone technology and the development of mobile phones grew rapidly. We see here a collection of phones from the 1980s, including a car telephone from 1985. Some of the designs will appear familiar and some less so.  Do you remember dial phones? How does an early hand held mobile compare to today's phones?
