National Museums Scotland

School visits at the National War Museum

Uncover stories of courage and determination, victory and defeat, heroics and heartache.

Within the walls of Edinburgh Castle relive wartime experiences on the home front and on the front line, through personal letters and mementoes as much as military equipment.

  • Our Land Girls and Lumber Jills exhibition (until February 2011) tells the important story of the Women’s Land Army (WLA) and Women’s Timber Corps (WTC) in Scotland. Find out what life was like as a Land Girl or a Lumber Jill in Scotland and how their work helped win the Second World War.
  • Explore our wartime life room, evoking the atmosphere of a 1940s tenement.  Meet characters from wartime Scotland and watch interviews with real Second World War veterans
  • Follow the First and Second World War trails around the museum
