Medieval blacksmith's workshop
Traces of a later workshop were also discovered at
Birnie.

Above: Artist’s reconstruction of the building in use. It dates
to about 1300-1500 AD, when Birnie was a small medieval village,
long after the roundhouses had disappeared.
Left: The dark area in the foreground is a medieval
blacksmith’s workshop. A gulley defined one side. The other side
was open, with posts holding up the roof. An earlier roundhouse is
in the background.
