Boy with home-made Chinese dragon

Chinese dragon project

Over the last few months families in Leith have been very busy creating a monster!

National Museums Scotland's Community Engagement team has brought four groups of people together with an artist to create a spectacular sculpture of a Chinese dragon. This eight foot long dragon will be hung at the entrance to  the Imagine gallery, which opens as part of our redevelopment in summer 2011. The dramatic dragon will welcome visitors into Imagine, a colourful interactive space for families where they will be able to explore festivities around the world.

Making the dragon

Several groups including Edinburgh Chinese school, Leith Primary, Stanwell Nursery and McDonald Road library family groups have been participating in creative and interactive workshops based around Chinese Dragons. The artist leading these workshops; Kim Bergsagel, has a range of experience of working locally and internationally and collaborating with communities to create large scale art works.

You can see pictures of the workshops and the dragon in progress below. Click on the images to see them in more detail.

Now we are nearing opening the spectacular dragon is nearing completion and preparing to make its journey from Kim’s studio in Leith to its permanent home in our new look museum.

Chinese New Year

On Sat 5 and Sunday 6 February, families were invited to come along to create their own colourful dragon puppets and find out more about the project at our Chinese New Year celebrations. You can see photos from the event here.

Meanwhile visitors can look forward to having a close encounter with this dragon themselves when the new gallery opens in summer.

For  more information on this project please contact Laura Bennison, Community Engagement Officer  on 0131 247 4435.
