Treasured projects
Our Treasured exhibition has proved an inspiration to families
and community groups around Scotland.
Treasured: Wonderful Things, Amazing Stories opened at the
National Museum of Scotland in November 2008. In 2007-2008, the
Community Engagement team worked with lots of different community
groups on the Treasured project.
Penguins and penny farthings
Young people from Kelty explored the collections and with the
help of a film worker created two short films based on their
favourite objects. The Kelty boys, all keen BMX bike riders, were
intrigued by the differences between their own bikes and a penny
farthing bike. One of the girls chose to highlight the plight of
the Emperor penguin.
Treasure books and bags
A multicultural families group run by Edinburgh Council
Community Learning and Development Service made treasure books and
bags to hold their treasured memories and objects.
Object artwork
Craigroyston and Hermitage Park Primary Schools created artwork
based on their favourite objects in the museum. Hermitage Park made
the objects into ingenious treasure boxes, and Craigroyston were
inspired to make giant bug masks and Egyptian mosaics as part of an
Edinburgh wide arts project, A Spot of Imagination.
Treasured films
Objects mean different things to different people. We filmed
people from the Treasured groups talking about their favourite
objects in the exhibition. This film can be viewed in the Treasured
exhibition, and you can also see selected
clips here.
