African dance adventure

Youth dance experts YDance will lead you on an African adventure in storytelling and dance. Handle real African artefacts and explore the myths and stories behind them. Get creative and active when you present your own interpretations.

  • Suitable for Levels 1 & 2 (P2-7)
  • Thursdays 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00

What will my pupils do in the workshop?

Introduction

  • Exploration of African artefacts: Bamileke stool, Gourd and Elephant skin.
  • Series of warm up movements.

Elephant moves

  • Discussion about the elephant, how it moves and how it may spend its day.
  • Learn movements associated to key ‘elephant’ words.
  • Hear a story about the elephant and perform movements whenever key ‘elephant’ words are mentioned.

Gourd dance

  • Explore different uses of a gourd through movement.
  • Gourd as a water carrier.
  • Gourd as a musical instrument- rhythmic patterns.
  • Gourd sequence- linking movements from previous sequences.

Bamileke stool dance

  • Hear an imaginative story about how the stool is carved and used.
  • Make up ‘freezes’ to do on stool.
  • Learn and perform a ‘Bamileke dance’ combining all movements and sequences from previous activities.

Cool down

  • Series of cool down movements

This workshop may be complimented by a visit to our Performance and Lives gallery.
