Pacific Dance Adventure

From the symbolic images that can represent a country, to ceremonial performances and war dances, explore museum artefacts and let youth dance group YDance lead you on an journey through the Pacific in movement and dance.

  • Suitable for Levels 3, 4 & Senior Phase (S1‒6)
  • Thursdays by arrangement 10.15 / 11.30 / 12.45 / 14:00 (1hr)

What will my pupils do in the workshop?

Introduction and warm up

  • Exploration of Pacific artefacts: Fujian war club & Tongan flag.
  • Series of warm up movements.

Introduction to movement

  • Walk pathways combining jumps, rolls, slides and turns.
  • Pair work: creating fighting poses, contact and non contact.

War club dance

  • Use their imaginary club as a walking stick.
  • Individual dance sequence.
  • Paired dance sequence.
  • Perform their fighting poses.
  • Develop travelling movements: ‘Moments of power’.

Tongan flag movements

  • Learn frozen shapes and movements relating to images on the flag.
  • Discuss symbolic meaning of sections of the flag.
  • Work in groups to create a sequence using their frozen shapes and movements.
  • Perform their sequence in groups.

Cool down

  • Series of slow cool down movements.

This workshop may be complimented by a visit to our Performance and Lives gallery.
