Knowledge Exchange Training

Every year we provide free workshops to colleagues in Scotland’s museums.

Around 700 participants have attended training courses run by National Museums Scotland as part of their Knowledge Exchange training since 2006. These free courses are a popular way to share knowledge and skills throughout the museum sector, and have been delivered all over Scotland.

The courses are informal and focus on sharing collections knowledge and skills by National Museums Scotland’ staff and invited guest speakers. Previous courses have including topics on Object handling, Purchasing, Disposal, Scottish Silver and Roman Archaeology amongst many others.

Responsive programme

We want to find the best mechanism to respond to collections needs, and to achieve this we are happy to run workshops in any part of Scotland. For more information, please download our catalogue of courses and responsive programme application form or contact Jennifer Reid on j.reid@nms.ac.uk.

Other knowledge exchange opportunities

As well as our knowledge exchange workshops we also offer work a number of other opportunities fo knowledge exchange through our involvement with forums and networks. In March 2013 we welcomed a group from Highland Museums Forum, who were given talks and tours of the museum by staff from anumber of different departments.  One attendee said of their visit:

“I am sure that I speak for all of the participants when I say how much I enjoyed seeing the objects through the eyes of the curators who really knew their subjects.  I would have no hesitation in recommending this type of visit to my staff as everyone would enjoy and benefit from such an enlightening view of a national museum”

Please contact Jennifer Reid on j.reid@nms.ac.uk for more information.
