Catherine the Great podcasts

Journalist Lee Randall meets the people behind the Catherine the Great: An Enlightened Empress exhibition for a series of podcasts exploring the life, times and collections of the famous Russian Empress.

Catherine Was Great

Our first podcast features Exhibition Officer Maureen Barrie, the driving force behind Catherine the Great: An Enlightened Empress. Here she discusses Catherine's origins as an obscure German princess, her rise to power and her life and lovers as Empress of all the Russias.

Catherine the Great Collector

Godfrey Evans, Principle Curator of European Applied Art at National Museums Scotland, introduces the fabulous collections amassed by Catherine the Great during her reign, superlative examples of which can be seen in the exhibition. Lee also talks to four curators from the State Hermitage Museum: Viacheslav Fedorov, Head of the Russian Department, Ivan Garmanov, Curator of Furniture in the Russian Deparment, Elizaveta Renne, Curator of Painting in the Western European Department and Marina Lopato, Curator of Silver in the Western European Department.
