Chinese toy musicians - can you find where they are hiding in the gallery?

Imagine

Imagine a place where you can create your own story, make music with your friends, dress up for a party or bring a dragon to life! Or would you rather build your own fantasy landscape with castles, animals and trees? Find all this and more in Imagine.

Aimed at families with children under eight, Imagine gives our family visitors a very special experience in the museum, allowing them to spend time together exploring and creating stories, art and music, all inspired by real objects from around the world.

Every object tells a story

In our Story section, you can put together your own story about a mermaid mystery, play with shadow puppets projected on the wall, race the Hare against the Tortoise and get comfy in the Story Corner with books and story bags linked to animal tales from around the world.

You can experiment with your own creativity in Create. A large Islamic panel with a striking geometric design is the starting point for making your own patterns. Or why not build your own oversized teapot, or create a fantasy landscape inspired by a 16th century Italian mosaic table top?

Party people will love Celebrate. Find some friends to help you make a Chinese dragon dance, dress up in celebratory outfits from different cultures or try making music with instruments with a difference.

Don’t miss…

Imagine also includes Play, a space created specially for toddlers, which encourages learning through play. A selection of intriguing objects are hiding, waiting to be found, and bags of hands-on toys linked to the three main gallery themes give even the youngest children a chance to join in the fun.
