Jacket and brooch by Jean Muir

Jean Muir: A Fashion Icon

Over 40,000 visitors enjoyed our Jean Muir exhibition at National Museum of Scotland.

"The world's greatest dressmaker", Jean Muir designed clothes that she hoped every woman would wish to wear.

Famous for her use of tactile fabrics and minimalist designs, Muir had a large and loyal fanbase, from royalty to politicians, actresses and models.

Jean Muir: A Fashion Icon examined Muir's training, early career and emergence as a major designer in the 1960s. Starting with rare examples from the Jane and Jane label, the exhibition then explored Muir's famous label, Jean Muir Ltd.

Selected garments displayed Miss Muir's technical brilliance, from her choice of fabric to superlative cut and attention to detail.

The exhibition also highlighted her legacy, and the lasting influence Muir has had on fashion and designers alike.
