Take a voyage of discovery through the exciting new galleries of the Royal Museum building.

Arrivals Hall

The new Arrivals Hall will offer visitors their first experience of the transformed museum. This new principal entrance (from Chambers Street) will be lively, accessible and welcoming.

As well as offering visitors their first encounter with iconic objects from the national collections, the Arrivals Hall will provide new amenities, including a new cafe, better shop and improved facilites for school children, disabled people and families.

Wall of Wonder

The central defining feature of the National Museum of Scotland is the Grand Gallery, in which the Wall of Wonder will be the major highlight. A bold and dynamic installation, it rises from the street-level Arrivals Hall, up through the Grand Gallery and through to the top floor, displaying an amazing array of different objects from our vast collection.

Grand Gallery

The Grand Gallery's soaring, light-filled atrium is a unique example of Victorian architecture, and our treatment will enhance and complement its iconic status. The Grand Gallery will house large-scale objects that highlight Scotland’s contribution to the world and will host a regular and exciting events programme.

Discoveries

The new Discoveries gallery will reveal the stories behind some of the Museum’s most treasured objects and showcases Scots' achievements in leadership, inventiveness and military prowess across the world and throughout the centuries.

Discoveries explores the connection between some of our outstanding objects and the great figures associated with them.

World Cultures Galleries

The World Cultures galleries will explore how people across the globve live their lives and express themselves through music, art and performance. These collections, situated in seven new galleries, are the living legacy of what Scottish explorers, entrepreneurs, soldiers, merchants, missionaries, businesspeople and curators have created for the people of Scotland.

Natural World Galleries

Housed in six new galleries, the range and scope of the Natural World collections offer many opportunities for exhibitions that present the natural world in engaging and challenging displays.
Each gallery explores interesting and sometimes unexpected synergies with other disciplines, including World Cultures and Science & Technology. There'll also be plenty of opportunity to see, hear, touch, smell and get hands on!

Imagine

Imagine will be a place where children and families can play and share ideas together. Stimulated by a series of exciting hands-on exhibits – each one inspired by an object or objects from our World Cultures Collections – this gallery will be designed specifically for family visitors and young children, with a special area for toddlers.

Adventure Planet

A new interactive gallery for families and children, Adventure Planet allows visitors to become nature explorers and engage with fascinating specimens from our Natural World collections.
Adventure Planet will encourage curiosity, enthusiasm and respect for the natural world and help develop skills to be 'science detectives'.
