Egyptian treasures on loan

Iufenamun, the mummy priest, is going to East Ayrshire.

The coffin and mummy of Iufenamun will be one of the star attractions of a new exhibition at the Dick Institute in East Ayrshire. The exhibition, Ancient Egypt and Prehistoric Ayrshire, brings together Ancient Egyptian artefacts with Neolithic, Iron Age and Bronze Age weapons and tools from the South-West of Scotland, to highlight the belief systems of two very different peoples.

Iufenamun was an important priest at the Temple of Karnak, and was involved in the reburial of the royal New Kingdom mummies, which took place around 3,000 years ago. Our Object of the Month feature reveals more of Iufenamun’s fascinating story, and explains the painstaking work involved in the conservation of the mummy and coffin.

National Museums Scotland has loaned a selection of items from our Egyptian collection to the Dick Institute.

Ancient Egypt and Prehistoric Ayrshire runs from 8 May - 28 August 2010. Visit www.visitayrshire.com to find out more about the exhibition.
