Honouring the ancestors

Discover evocative African objects destined for the new World Cultures galleries.

In a lecture to be held on Wednesday 21 April, Dr Sarah Worden, Curator of African Collections, will reveal some of the many objects held in our collection used to contact, remember, recall and placate the ancestors, who retain great importance in the world of the living.

All of the objects discussed will be featured in three of the new World Cultures galleries opening in 2011.

Dr Worden explains: “This lecture is an opportunity to learn more about some of the fascinating and diverse range of objects from the African collections currently on display in the Treasured exhibition.  We will find out where they come from, how they were made, who used them and what they meant in peoples lives.”

To discover more about these fascinating items, join Dr Worden for her talk, which takes place in the National Museum of Scotland’s Early People gallery at 19:00.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and £4 concession, and are free to National Museums Scotland members. Call 0131 225 7534 or visit the information desk at the National Museum of Scotland to book your place.
