What looks like simply a charming mahogany chest opens to reveal
a treasure trove of gold, silver-gilt, glass and ivory items for
dining, toilette and sewing. It contains delightful coffee, tea and
chocolate pots, two candlesticks, a ewer and basin, two mirrors,
jars for scent, and manicure tools. Breathtakingly beautiful.
The Borghese nécessaire was made for Princess Pauline Borghese,
the notorious sister of the Emperor Napoleon. Today, it’s a
favourite piece for one particular volunteer guide.
Reflecting on how her life is enriched by learning and telling
others about our world-renowned treasures, this volunteer guide
made a decision that will enable others to enjoy a special
relationship with the museum and our artefacts. She has provided
for the National Museums in her will and so, through this
thoughtful and generous act, will help bring the past to life for
future generations.
Getting to know the breadth and riches of the national
collections is a wonderful journey of discovery that everyone can
take in their own way. Leaving a gift in your will ensures that, in
years to come, many others can explore, enjoy and learn from the
extraordinary objects that bring you so much pleasure.
