As part of our outreach programme, we have developed several resources which are available for schools and community groups to borrow.

You can find details of resources to use in our museums on the school visits pages.

Magic Carpet

Our award-winning Magic Carpet is a unique and intriguing storytelling, rhyme and object based resource, developed by Family Learning groups working in partnership with National Museums Scotland.

From Dolly the sheep to racing cars and dinosaurs, the Magic Carpet brings the world of the National Museum of Scotland to you and your group. The resource is available to borrow for free by eligible groups in the Edinburgh area. It is available outwith Edinburgh at the organisation's own cost of pick up and return. Loan of the resource will be for approximately six weeks or less. Please book via:

Primary school loan boxes

Museum2Go Outreach loan boxes

We have a range of loan boxes, created by pupils, for pupils, with funding by The Robertson Trust. Each box contains real and replica items and has been carefully researched by pupils and teachers, working with National Museums Scotland curatorial experts and Learning and Programmes staff.

Each box is available for short-term loan (2 weeks) or long-term loan (a whole term). Pre-booking is essential. Schools within Edinburgh must collect the loan box from the National Museum of Scotland. Schools outwith Edinburgh can arrange for delivery if needed.
