How should I prepare my pupils?

Split your class into four groups. Objects will be laid out on tables for your arrival, grouped across the four themes: Life, Mummification, Afterlife and Egyptology.

Download the notes accompanying the box here. Printed copies of these will be provided on the table next to the objects during your session. If you would like pupils to write/draw during the handling session, please remember to bring these with you and that only pencils can be used.

What will we do?

A unique experience for your class to handle real ancient Egyptian objects, alongside replicas to bring to life the smells, sights and sounds of daily life. This session is introduced by a Museum Enabler, then involves teachers and adult helpers leading the hands-on learning. Your 60 minutes will be as follows:

10 minutes: Meet Museum Enabler at the schools' meeting point and travel with them to use the handling box. The Enabler will introduce the box to you and your class.

45 minutes: Teacher leads the session. We will display some example questions for you to use, but it is up to you how you use this time. We suggest you move pupils around each of the four themes of objects.

5 minutes: Tidy up tables, ensuring all notes are returned to the correct tables. The Enabler will return to check if you have any questions and to help with the reset.

A visit to our new ancient Egyptian gallery will be included in your itinerary for the day. Please check your confirmation email for details of this.
