Inspired by the Body Beautiful exhibition, S5–6 pupils will learn the skills they need to prepare a portrait photography shoot and create a related zine, with one day at the museum and an afternoon at Stills: Centre for Photography.

Classes: S5–6
Cost: £10 per pupil
Timings: 2 days, 10:00–15:30 at the National Museum of Scotland, 12:30–15:30 at Stills, both in the centre of Edinburgh
(check your booking for timings and arrive at the museum at least 15 minutes before the start of your session)

You can still visit our Body Beautiful exhibition on a teacher-led visit.

Our Photography course is very popular and spaces are limited. In order that we can try to accommodate every booking request, schools are requested to provide confirmed pupil numbers when booking.

How should I prepare my class for this workshop?

During the day at the museum, pupils will have the opportunity to explore the museum and costumes in the morning and will then take it in turns to create portraits in the afternoon. Please ensure pupils bring any props, costumes, make-up, hair accessories, clothing to be worn underneath costumes, or other additional items they might require and be prepared to change into costumes after lunch. We recommend black t-shirt/top and black leggings/trousers/tights.

What will my pupils do in the workshop?

Learn the skills you need to prepare for your own photo shoot with one day at the museum and an afternoon at Stills: Centre for Photography to create your own page layout for a zine.

Work with professional photographers from Stills to explore approaches to lighting, composition and styling and create your own image, inspired by the Body Beautiful exhibition.

Pupils will:

  • Visit the Body Beautiful exhibition.
  • Shape their own learning through selecting the location of their shoot and the styling of their portraits
  • Be invited to bring along their own choice of props and costumes in response to any particular style of portraiture they are inspired by.
  • Become familiar with the latest photography equipment, provided by Stills, such as Digital SLR cameras (Canon 600D) and studio lighting equipment (Bowens Flash units).
  • Work with a professional photographer to create studio and environmental shots.
  • Develop ICT skills using iMac workstations with Adobe Photoshop (CC) and Lightroom.
  • Gain experience of creating page layouts, utilising text and images, to make a zine.
  • Engage with future career opportunities by working with experienced photographers and in professional environments.
  • Have their image displayed at the museum and receive their printed photograph afterwards.
