Edinburgh International Children’s Festival Family Encounters Day

Grand Gallery (and beyond)
Free, some performances may require sign up on the day
Join us as we kick off the 2023 Edinburgh International Children’s Festival with Family Encounters – a day of free pop-up performances, artist interventions and activities for the whole family.
Family Encounters is a great way to get up close to exciting new performances and interactive experiences from local artists. Discover drop-in activities throughout the museum, including walk-about characters, dance performances, treasure hunts, hands-on art stations and more.
This year’s programme also includes a new performance which has been designed by children from Forthview Primary School as part of the Creative Encounters project, which places young people at the heart of the creative process and decision making.
Look out for information soon about two more performances specially commissioned by National Museums Scotland and Edinburgh International Children’s Festival. The full Family Encounters Programme will be available to download in May.
The Edinburgh International Children’s Festival runs from 27 may to 4 June in venues across Edinburgh.
This year’s programme delivers performances with big ideas, epic stories and flamboyant physicality which will help young audiences make sense of our sometimes-conflicted world. The Festival cements its reputation for pushing the boundaries of what is expected of children’s theatre and dance, exploring timely themes, all in joyful, exciting and accessible ways.
