Description

Sheet from a colour woodblock print diptych from the series Genji goshu yojō (Later Collection of the Remaining Passions of Genji), in which each diptych features two figures and represents a chapter, with kirikane (squares of gold leaf) blind-printed on the background, entitled E-awase, depicting two fishwives, one seated beside her basket and holding a pipe, the other standing, her basket on her head: by Utagawa Kunisada, Japan, 1858
