Dish, earthenware, blue and white ware, painted in greyish dark blue and brown under a translucent glaze with a flower shrub in the centre surrounded by a landscape of trees, hills, bridges and buildings: Asia, West Asia, Iran, Safavid period, c. 1690-1720

Physical description

Round earthenware dish with straight rim, light coloured ceramic body covered with a greenish quartz rich slip, painted inside and outside in a greyish-blackish blue and covered with a translucent colourless glaze; the rim painted brown; interior decoration: centre with a flower shrub against white background and surrounded by a chain-like band; well and flange with a continuous landscape motif with bridges, buildings, trees and hills, set between a double and a single line; exterior decoration: six panels with dividers in between; the dividers with an abstract tassel and the panels with a flower shape, all set between two single lines; the footring with a single line; inside footring glazed and with three marks from kiln supports; blue pigment running into glaze, interior centre worn, a tight net of crazing visible; interior and exterior with brown stains; long crazes around footring are stained brown. Condition: One area, about 90 mm wide and 35 mm high, broken into three sherds which have been glued back together. These are probably the original sherds. A small area of repair on rim, filled in; rim chipped in a few places; one larger chip probably painted brown; further two chips white.
