Dish, earthenware, blue and white ware, painted in dark blue under a translucent glaze with a single large flower stem surrounded by dots and leaves and set in an eleven-pointed star and a hatched lobed band: Asia, West Asia, Iran, Safavid period, c. 1690-1720

Physical description

Round earthenware dish with straight rim, ceramic body covered with a quartz rich slip, painted inside and outside in deep dark blue and covered with a translucent colourless glaze; the rim painted light brown; interior decoration: centre with a single large flower stem emerging from a horizontal line; surrounded by leaves and dots, and set in a eleven-pointed star and a hatched lobed band; the well plain; the flange with a single thick blue line underneath the rim; exterior decoration: between single lines four times the 'Painting' symbol of the auspicious Chinese po-ku, the Hundred Antiques; around the footring a double blue line; footring with quartz slip and glazed; dish warped; the interior glaze slightly worn on centre, glaze thinly applied with a few areas with no glaze; exterior: glaze with slightly turquoise tint in certain areas; some brown stains, one craze line from rim through the well, longer inside than outside;
