Roman inscription fragment dedicated by the 8th and 22nd Legions, from Hoddom, Dumfriesshire, probably derives from the Roman fort of Birrens

Physical description

Lower right corner of an ornate but damaged red sandstone slab, preserving part of three lines of the inscription, a raised border, and part of a flanking pelta and rosette. The inscription records detachments of two German-based legions serving in the area. It reads “[…] VIII.AVG/[…] XXII.PRI/[…]F”. This can be expanded and translated as “…[detachments of] the Eighth Legion August and the Twenty-Second Legion Primigenia made (this)”.
