For hundreds of years our natural sciences collections have been used by people to help them understand our world and what shapes it.

Today over 10 million specimens tell the story of our planet, from rocks to insects and allosaurs to octopuses, spanning millions of years from across the globe. They are an incredible resource for all of us to learn from, and have never been as important as they are right now.

Coming face to face with the wonder of our natural world fascinates children, and even the youngest are hungry to explore more.

Yet when 1 in 10 species in Scotland is at risk of extinction, we have an urgent need to inspire a lifelong love and respect for the natural world, and help children understand what they can do to protect it.

Parents sometimes find it hard to explore these issues with their children. So here at the National Museums Scotland we want to change that, and we need your help.

With your gift, we can create a dedicated space for children and their families to discover the natural world together and introduce children to the importance of our environment and what each of us can do to help protect it.

From the moment children enter the gallery they’ll be transported into the natural world. They’ll dive down amongst marine life and crawl through woodland with the minibeasts. They’ll travel through time, understanding extinction from dinosaurs to dodos and how our planet adapts and survives. And on their journey, they’ll discover some of the ways animals’ habitats need our care and protection.

By donating today, you will help us inspire children to understand nature’s challenges and give them a lifelong love and respect for our natural world.
