Physical description

Painting entitled 'Chartreuse Vortices', collage in oil painted with impasto technique with textile components, abstract image in shades of blue, green and brown. Incorporated textile components include Bernat Klein velvet ribbon tweed, woven wool and yarn samples. Signed on the front lower right via scrape into painted surface 'Klein 68'. Painted and applied onto prepared canvas. Canvas stretched over timber frame with timber wedge supports. Frame painted in black with facing edge painted gold. Back of painting stamped with inscription ''WINTON' / Prepared by / WINDSOR & NEWTON LTD. / LONDON ENGLAND / OFC', and inscribed with handwritten ink 'Chartreuse Vortices / Klein / '67'. Frame with sticker handwritten in ink '84 CHARTREUSE VORTICES', and second sticker handwritten in ink '19', stamped in ink 'OFC' and with note handwritten in pencil '17'. Paper label attached to frame printed with 'CHRISTIES / The Bernat Klein Studio Sale / November 24, 1994 Sale 1443 / Bernat Klein / Chartreuse Vortices / signed and dated lower right Klein 68, and / signed, inscribed and dated on the reverse / Chartreuse Vortices Klein 67; / oil on brushed mohair and yarn on canvas / 36 x 28 in. (91.4 x 71.2 cm) / Lot 72 Estimate: £1,000-1,500'. Also on frame inscriptions handwritten in ink '39', 'Y9785' and stamped in ink '36 x 28'.
