Goblet

Description

Horn cup, said to have belonged to Emperor Tewodros II, and described as being ‘obtained’ and ‘taken’ by an unidentified individual at the storming and looting of Maqdala during the Abyssinian Campaign (1867 - 1868), Ethiopia, East Africa. Later acquired by the medical officer Sir William Mackenzie, likely in India c. 1868-1870s, as he did not serve in the campaign

Physical description

Cream and brown-coloured horn cup with a fillet at the lip and foot. A handwritten inscription beneath the cup reads: ‘King Theodore’s Horn Drinking Mug. / Taken at Magdala / Given by Sir Wm Mackenzie, K.C.B., London’.
