Kate Holub-Swindell
Specific responsibility: Curation of insect collections.
Research interests/expertise: Care of insect collections and collections digitisation.
Kate joined the Invertebrate team in 2025 to support the curation and management of our insect collections, with a focus on preparation for digitisation projects. With an MSc in Environmental Management from Aberdeen University, and a BSc in Natural History from the University of South Wales. Kate has previous experience as a curatorial assistant and digitiser at the entomological collections in the Natural History Museum in London. There she worked on a range of digitisation projects including the SYNTHESYS+ Virtual Access Freshwater Insect project, and the on-demand digitisation programme for digital loans. She then worked as a digitisation data manager for the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
In her role, Kate helps care for and manage the internationally significant entomology collections at National Museums Scotland. She primarily focuses on the re-housing and re-curation of material and preparing parts of the collection for digitisation as part of the UK-wide DiSSCo programme. The work is key to making this historically important collection more widely accessible for research and public engagement.
