From designing your own fashion collection to driving a Formula 1 racing car, there are plenty of interactive activities and games to keep the whole family entertained at the National Museum of Scotland. 

Discover 10 interactive highlights, and seek out the rest yourself across 5 floors.

1. Drive a Formula 1 car

Location: Explore gallery, Level 1

Find out what it's like to burn rubber in an F1 sports car in our racing simulator. Not your style? Why not take to the track in a vintage Morris Mini? 

Rides cost £1 each. Children must be at least 137cm tall to reach the pedals.


2. Find out what animal you are

Location: Animal World, Level 1

Step onto the scales and find out if you weigh the same as a koala, penguin, or chimpanzee. Why not see how many people it takes to match the weight of a polar bear?

3. Design your own garment

Location: Fashion and Style gallery, Level 1

Try your hand at fashion design by styling a garment and watching it walk the runway. Choose from a range of styles and customise the cut, fabric, and colour.

4. Compose your own tune

Location: Performance and Lives gallery, Level 3

Give different instruments a go including a slit drum, thumb piano, xylophone, and a giant set of pipes. Further test your musical ear by composing a tune with recordings from instruments all over the world.

5. Jump to generate energy

Location: Enquire gallery, Level 5

Shake off any extra energy by jumping up and down on floor panels to see if you can generate enough energy to light up a whole tower.

6. Play dress up and take a selfie

Location: Imagine gallery, Level 1

Let the little ones play dress up and have fun with crazy mirrors. The perfect spot for a weird and wacky selfie.


7. Build a pyramid and more

Location: Ancient Egypt gallery, Level 5

Discover ancient Egypt with a series of interactive games. Build a pyramid to stand the test of time, create an ancient Egyptian name in hieroglyphics, and see if you can make the journey through the afterlife.

8. Solve Roman and Viking puzzles

Location: Early People gallery, Level -1

Delve into the lives of the Vikings and the ancient Romans by solving hands-on puzzles. Build a Roman fort gate, challenge a friend to reach Baghdad on a Viking raid, and complete a Roman design puzzle.

9. Play with fish at sea

Location: Adventure Planet gallery, Level 5

Design your own fish and see it swim through the ocean. Watch out for the sharks!

10. Test your senses

Location: Animal Senses gallery, Level 3

See how you would do in the animal world by testing your senses. Check out what it’s like to see like an insect, test how good your nose is, and see if you can hear as low as an elephant or as high as a dolphin.
