About Creative Workshop: Drawing the Earth
In this workshop, led by geologist and illustrator Vojta Hybl, you will explore the rock cycle – the process by which rocks change from one type to another.
2026 marks 300 years since James Hutton's birth. Often credited as the father of modern geology, Hutton's ideas about deep time changed how understood the age of the Earth.
Vojta will combine scientific knowledge of geology with a range of creative approaches to demonstrate just how dynamic rocks can be. You will visit some of our collections inspired by James Hutton, to encourage your drawing as a new way into understanding geology.
This relaxed drawing workshop is suited to anyone who wants to explore geology from scientific and artistic points of view.
This workshop is in partnership with the James Hutton Institute.

- The Learning Centre is a nut-free space

- As part of the workshop, you will visit some of our Geology collections within the museum. All locations have step-free access.
About the artist
Vojta Hybl is a Czech-born illustrator, writer and educator living in the Cairngorms. Originally trained as a geologist and physical geographer, he started using art to share the stories hidden in rocks and landscapes in 2021. Vojta combines his scientific background with art to create illustrations that reveal the interconnectedness of everything – and everyone – on Earth.

We want everyone who comes to our museums to enjoy their time with us and make the most of their visit.
How to get to the space
You can make your way to the studios by walking through the Collecting Stories gallery. Walk up the staircase to Level 4. Turn right and the studios will be through the doors ahead of you.
There is also lift access via the lift next to the staircase. The dimensions of the lift are 137cm x 150cm (4ft 6in x 4ft 11in).
The door to each studio is not automatic and cannot be opened by a push pad. During an event it may already be open or a staff member will available to offer assistance.
Wheelchair access
There is significant space to use a wheelchair in each studio.
Wheelchairs can be borrowed from the information desks at the Entrance Hall and Tower Entrance. They cannot be booked in advance.
Seating
Tables and seating in the studios are not fixed.
Hearing induction loops
There is no induction loop in either studio.
Toilets and baby changing
The nearest toilets are on Level 4 next to the studios. There are standard toilets and an accessible toilet. A baby changing table is located in the accessible toilet.
If you require a changing places toilet, please ask a member of staff.
