About Creative Workshops for Kids: Imagine That!
Exciting, hands-on creative workshops for kids ages 7-11.
Led by a visiting artist, these small, group workshops will explore different artistic and creative practices to help young people learn more about the museum’s exhibitions and collection without their grown-ups present.
The workshops will take place mainly in our Learning Centre studios but also include a visit to an exhibition or gallery.

Imagine that!
What are the ingredients of a great story? Join artist and writer Hannah Kelly for a workshop all about stories. Explore the museum through playful prompts and let your imagination transform objects into story ingredients. Then head back to our studios and begin to build your story, mix and matching your ingredients to discover the recipe for a story - the building blocks that turn ideas into plots.
Good to know
- If you book a morning session, drop-off is at the Tower Entrance, on the corner of Chambers Street and George IV Bridge, from 9:15
- If you book an afternoon session, drop-off is at the Learning Centre, Level 4 from 13:15
- All materials are provided
- Up to 2 carers or supporting adults can attend per 1 disabled ticket purchased. Please let us know at check-in if you are intending to stay in a supporting capacity.
Prefer to drop-off all day?
Your child can enjoy a whole day of creative fun by booking our Shadows on the Wall: Storytelling through Shadow Puppetry workshop on the same day in the morning or afternoon.
For children attending both workshops, we can provide a lunch space in the Learning Centre and monitoring by staff over lunch-time. Please note that lunch is not provided.

Hannah Kelly
Hannah Kelly is an Edinburgh artist and writer who loves to see young people stretch the muscle of the imagination while they play.
As well as her work as an artist and illustrator she works as a creative freelancer for galleries, charities and book festivals across Scotland. She has won several Scottish writing prizes and is currently writing a fantasy adventure story for her literary agent.
Accessibility and facilities
We want everyone who comes to our museums to enjoy their time with us and make the most of their visit.
How to get to the space
You can make your way to the studios by walking through the Collecting Stories gallery. Walk up the staircase to Level 4. Turn right and the studios will be through the doors ahead of you.
There is also lift access via the lift next to the staircase. The dimensions of the lift are 137cm x 150cm (4ft 6in x 4ft 11in).
The door to each studio is not automatic and cannot be opened by a push pad. During an event it may already be open or a staff member will available to offer assistance.
Wheelchair access
There is significant space to use a wheelchair in each studio.
Wheelchairs can be borrowed from the information desks at the Entrance Hall and Tower Entrance. They cannot be booked in advance.
Seating
Tables and seating in the studios are not fixed.
Hearing induction loops
There is no induction loop in either studio.
Toilets and baby changing
The nearest toilets are on Level 4 next to the studios. There are standard toilets and an accessible toilet. A baby changing table is located in the accessible toilet.
If you require a changing places toilet, please ask a member of staff.
