About Magic Carpet

Our Magic Carpet sessions introduce you and your little one to some of the fascinating objects and themes in the museum in a fun and interactive way.

Each month we will explore a different theme using song, rhyme, movement, play and handling objects, to help you and your little one discover more about our topic.

If you would like to learn more about our topic, the friendly Learning Communicators leading your session will be happy to suggest some galleries for you to visit afterwards.

About Magic Carpet

  • Magic Carpets are designed for under 5s and their caregivers.
  • Sessions last 45 minutes, including settle in time and free play/tummy time.
  • Places are limited to 12 children per session with a maximum of two adults per child.
  • Due to the interactive nature of Magic Carpets, there is a maximum ratio of two children to one adult.
  • Babes in arms/under 6 months do not require a ticket.

On the day

Meeting point
  • Please meet your Magic Carpet leaders in Hawthornden Court to check in
  • Check in will open 15 minutes before session start time
  • If you’re running late or struggling to find your way around, our friendly Visitor Experience staff will be happy to help show you the way.

Please note: some of our sessions will take place in the Learning Centre which is served by one small elevator that can be busy. The space is also accessible by stair.

Visiting with a buggy

We advise using the Tower Entrance on the corner of Chambers Street and George IV Bridge. Buggy parking is available in the 'Kingdom of the Scots' gallery on Level 1.

On the Magic Carpet
  • Please take shoes off before sitting down on the Magic Carpet.
  • There will be lots of singing, movement, and sensory play. Each month will explore a different topic, with repeating songs and actions, to help your little one build confidence and excitement.
  • Adults are usually seated on the Magic Carpet with their child but if you require additional seating for any reason, please just let us know.
  • Adults are responsible for their child(ren) at all times.
Feeding and changing
  • You are welcome to give your little one milk or water during the session but we kindly ask that no other snacks are eaten on the Magic Carpet.
  • Magic Carpet leaders or our Visitor Experience staff will be happy to direct you to one of our picnic spaces, found around the museum.
  • National Museums Scotland welcomes breastfeeding. Our session leaders can direct you to the nearest baby changing facility and can provide backed seating if this is easier for feeding.
Additional Support Needs

Magic Carpets have a relaxed, informal structure with lots of sensory play, songs, and gentle movement. Your little one is welcome to stand up, move around or sleep if they need to.

  • Visual stories are available upon request (with at least five days advanced notice). We may be unable to accommodate last minute requests.
  • Sensory backpacks are available from the Information Desks at the Main Entrance or the Tower Entrance.

If you or your child has any additional needs, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at PublicEvents@nms.ac.uk and let us know how we can best support your visit.
