About Summer Family Fun
Join us on Mondays and Fridays for a range of exciting, drop-in activities for the whole family.
Each week, we’ll explore a new theme – from Scottish stories to around-the-world-adventures, there will be something new to discover.

Dolly the Sheep’s 30th Birthday Bash
Dolly the Sheep’s Big Birthday Card
Ages: 5+
Celebrate Dolly’s 30th birthday by adding a message to our giant birthday card.
Rag Rug
Ages: 5+
Help us complete our Dolly the sheep rag rug using donated fabric scraps.
Object Handling
Ages: 5+
Get up close to some fascinating objects and learn more about the world’s most iconic sheep.
Make Your Own Clone Craft
Ages: 3+
Design your own Dolly the sheep with our simple colouring craft activity.
Book Nook
Ages: Under 3s
Enjoy sheep-themed colouring in and mini looms for little ones in our early years zone.
Celebrating Insect Week
Bug Detectives
Ages: 5+
Grab your magnifying glass and help us classify different insects.
Object Handling
Ages: 5+
Marvelous moths, beautiful butterflies, delightful dung beetles (yes, you read that right), we’ve got them all. Get up close to our incredible specimens and discover the weird and wonderful world of insects.
Gallery Mini Trail
Ages: 7+
We’re going on a bug hunt! Pick up a copy of our mini trail at the object handling trolley and head off to find some of the fascinating insects on display in the museum.

Cosy up in our book nook for some quiet reading or get scribbling with our colouring sheets for little ones.
Build a Bug workshops
Times: 10:30, 11:30, 13:30 & 14:30
Location: Event Space, Level 2
Ages: 5+
Free, sign up on the day in the Grand Gallery.
Insects come in all different shapes and sizes and are good at different things. Learn about their different body parts and what they’re used for, then work together to create your own insect using every day and second-hand objects.
Workshops are around 30 minutes long. Children under 16 must be accompanied by at least one adult over the age of 18.

Dinosaur Trail

Pick up a copy of our Discovering Dinosaurs trail to take with you as you explore the museum. Available in English and Gaelic.
Book Nook
Ages: 3+
Get comfy in our beanbag corner for some quiet reading or get hands-on with dino-themed activities for imaginative play.
Fossil Finders
Ages: 5+
Discover how fossils are made and what we can learn from them. Have a go at being a palaeontologist and see what you can uncover.

Space: Mission Planet Earth
Mission Control
Ages: 7+
Humans have brought lots of things back from space but what have we left behind? Find out in our Space Trash game.
Research Hub
Ages: 7+
Join our Learning Team to discover fascinating facts about space and how we can use what we learn to look after planet Earth. Embark on a mission and discover practical ways you can help your home planet.

Object Handling

Pink, yellow, blue and green, we’ve got birds you’ve (probably) never seen. Join our Learning Team and get up close to some of the most colourful bird specimens in our collection.
