About Mary, Queen of Scots: Renaissance and Resistance
Few figures in Scottish history have captured the imagination like Mary, Queen of Scots. We are familiar with the story of her life, its dramatic events, and its sad ending on the executioner’s block. More than 440 years after her death, her story continues to fascinate. But how well do we really know her?
Our exhibition ‘Mary, Queen of Scots: Renaissance and Resistance’ will challenge perceptions of one of Scotland’s most renowned monarchs. Discover the many facets of Mary. Renaissance princess, majestic queen, defiant woman, resistant captive.
For centuries, Mary’s reputation has been shaped by the events that led to her forced abdication in 1567. Depicted by a group of rebellious nobles as a guilty, unstable adulteress, her story has often been characterised by her downfall. This exhibition will re-examine those narratives. Mary will be presented as a Scottish Renaissance queen fiercely resisting those who tried to silence her.
Visitors will encounter objects and stories that bring the vibrancy of 16th century Scotland to life. This will include 100 loans from across the UK and Europe, some never seen before in Scotland. Visitors will also rediscover some of the National Collection’s most iconic objects, from a spectacular silver casket to magnificent jewels.
For too long, Mary in the popular imagination has been dressed in black. Her life has been seen through the lens of her violent death. This exhibition will capture the full colour of her life, starting with Mary clothed in Renaissance pink and dripping in pearls.
This exhibition is made possible with the support of the Mary Stewart Giving Circle and the K.T. Wiedemann Foundation.
