About Centre for Open Learning: Discovering Decorative Arts

The University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Open Learning invites you to take your learning beyond the classroom.

Explore where beauty, function and meaning intersect in this course exploring the decorative arts collections of the National Museum of Scotland.

You will study the historical development of finely crafted objects. Consider how these objects reflect the cultures, values and ideas of the societies that produced them, as well as their influence on modern artistic practice.

Examine artists’ sources, ideas and inspirations across a wide range of materials, including clay, glass, metalwork and furniture from around the world and throughout history.

The course also explores how belief systems, industry, trade and technology have shaped decorative art.

This course is led by Karen A Clulow BA MA FSA Scot.
