Upper stone of a quern of Niedermendig lava, complete with iron fittings. Forms a pair with lower stone x.FRA 1642 B. Diameter 420mm; height 120mm. Weight 33kg. Vertical iron handle socket with midrib (diameter 52mm, height 49mm) on the side of the stone, held in a bent perforation through the stone by lead; the two arms of the socket protrude 89mm and 94mm from the lead. Spindle plate set into top of feeder pipe and held with lead; length (with lead) 154mm, width 30mm. Found in pit XIX. Illustrated in Curle 1911, pl XVII, right.
