Physical description

Upper stone of a quern of Niedermendig lava, complete with iron fittings, from the Roman fort of Newstead, Roxburghshire (Scottish Borders). Forms a pair with lower stone X.FRA 1639 B and spindle X.FRA 1639 C. Diameter 450mm; height 133mm. Vertical iron handle socket (diameter 45mm, height 38mm) on the side of the stone, held in a bent perforation through the stone by lead; the arms of the socket do not protrude from the lead. Spindle plate set into top of feeder pip (length 107mm), with the tip of the broken spindle preserved in the hole. Found in pit LXI. The number “1937.476” on the iron socket is wrong; it is in a different hand from that used for 1937.475-6 (FRA 1641-2). The dimensions indicate this is part of FRA 1639.
