Physical description

Upper stone of a quern of Niedermendig lava, complete with iron fittings. Forms a pair with lower stone X.FRA 1641 B. Diameter 420mm; height 137mm. Weight 34kg. Vertical iron handle socket (diameter 50mm, height 41mm) on the side of the stone, held in a bent perforation through the stone by lead; the two arms of the socket protrude 50-55mm from the lead. Spindle plate set into top of feeder pipe and held with lead; length (with lead) 131mm. Found in pit X. Illustrated in Curle 1911, pl XVII, left.
