Physical description

Upper stone of a quern of Niedermendig lava, complete with iron fittings. Forms a pair with lower stone X.FRA 1640 B and spindle X.FRA 1640 C. Diameter 375mm; height 110mm. Vertical iron handle socket, concave in profile (diameter 51mm, height 47mm) on the side of the stone, held in a bent perforation through the stone by lead; the two arms of the socket protrude 45mm and 51mm from the lead. Slightly arched spindle plate set into top of feeder pipe and held with lead; length (with lead) 113mm, width 34mm. Found in pit XXII.
