Physical description

Iron quern spindle from Niedermendig lava quern-pair X.FRA 1640 A & X.FRA 1640 B. Round-sectioned rod that widens slightly from one end for some two-thirds of its length before running into a square-sectioned tapering point. In use the spike was set in the lower stone (its square cross-section helping to prevent it rotating with the upper stone) with the round-sectioned part of the spindle running through the upper stone to end in the spindle plate. Length 152mm.
