Physical description

Bookbinding. Embossed leather. Front cover decorated with seven scenes of God the Father and the Creation of the World. Spine entitled BIBLIA.INNOCENTUM. Back cover decorated with three circles containing a female bookbinder, Phoebe Traquair’s monogram PAT and P [two conjoined Os]. On J. W. Mackail, Biblia Innocentium (London, 1897). The front cover is divided into equal horizontal zones. The top zone has a central lunette, while the other three zones are divided vertically, in the centre, to form six rectangular fields. God the Father is represented in the top zone. His head and flowing beard are contained within the lunette. The curved outline suggests both a ‘glory’ and the world itself. To the left and right of the lunette are the Creator’s hands, raised vertically in blessing but also reminding one of the hands of the crucified Christ. Second zone, left: A crescent moon and two planets (left) and over half a radiating sun (right). Second zone, right: A five-petalled flower (left) and a tree (right) growing on top of a part of a sphere (the world). Third zone, left: Three whales, arranged diagonally, with their heads on the right. Third zone, right: Three birds flying to the left. Fourth zone, left: Six bears facing right. The bear at the front is in profile and the others are arranged behind him. Only the top part of their heads and bodies are represented. Fourth zone, right: A kneeling, naked woman facing right, a central, frontally posed, naked standing child and kneeling naked man, facing left. The spine bears the raised title: BIBLIA INNOCENTUM. The second I in Innocentium is omitted. The upper half of the back cover is embossed with an upper circle containing a female bookbinder at work, in profile, facing right. This circle overlaps two conjoined circles. The circle on the left contains Phoebe Traquair’s monogram, PAT, while the circle on the right contains the letter P and two conjoined Os. The binding is on a book entitled ‘Biblia Innocentium: Being the story of God’s chosen people before the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ upon earth, written anew for children by J.W. Mackail, sometime fellow of Balliol College, Oxford.’ It was published by Longmans, Green & Co., 39 Paternoster Row, London, New York and Bombay, 1897. A note on the reverse reads: This book was printed for Reverend Turner in June 1893, and the publication transferred to Longmans, Green & Co. in March 1897.
