Join our volunteer guide to explore Scotland’s stories through highlight objects in our Early People and Kingdom of the Scots galleries.

Our free public guided tours are for adult individuals and small groups (up to six people only). Each tour is limited to a maximum of 10 people. It is not possible to reserve places in advance.

Meet your guide five minutes before the tour start time at the Guided Tour Meeting Point in the Entrance Hall, Level 0, to reserve your place.

If you wish to be informed about when we reopen bookings for private charged tours for groups, email tours@nms.ac.uk.

Visiting safely 

Safety measures are in place to ensure your visit is as safe and enjoyable as possible. Current visiting information can be found on our Plan Your Visit pages.  

Access

We want everyone who comes to our museums to enjoy their time with us and make the most of their visit.  

  • There is level access to the Museum via the main doors to the Entrance Hall on Chambers Street and the Tower entrance at the corner of Chambers Street and George IV Bridge.  
  • Lifts are available to all floors and accessible toilets are available on most floors, as well as a Changing Places (U) toilet in the Entrance Hall on Level 0. 
  • Guide dogs, hearing dogs and other recognised assistance dogs are admitted.
