Description

Carved woooden standing female figure covered in black pigment, with high crested coiffure, rings around the neck, holding her breasts and with bent knees, with strings of white beads wrapped around the waist and a necklace of black and white beads, the eyes and mouth are overlaid with metal plates and cicatrisation patterns on the torso and chest: Africa, West Africa, Sierra Leone, Temne or Mende people, collected 1843 - 1844, early 1840s
