Physical description

Round earthenware dish with straight rim, ceramic body covered with a quartz rich slip, painted inside and outside in different shades of a bright dark blue and covered with a translucent slightly turquoise coloured glaze; the rim painted dark brown; interior decoration: centre with a petalled flower surrounded by four flowers with leaves, set in an nine-pointed star and an outer lobed band; the well with six bracketed panels with flower sprays, the dividers with abstract tassels; exterior decoration: six panels between single lines with a geometrical form reminding of the 'Pair of Books' symbol from the Chinese po-ku, or The Hundred Antiques, surrounded by six dots; exterior footring with a double blue line; inside covered with white quartz slip, two pieces of clay stuck to it; painter's mark faintly visible in footring; interior potentially painted by two different people as the pigment in the centre is rather thickly applied compared to more delicate flowers in panels; glaze worn in centre, scratches on the well; two cracks on rim and yellow stains interior and exterior.
