Cream silk fukusa (gift cover) lined with orange-red silk with embroidered design of a dancer performing the butterfly dance wearing a costume of a butterfly wings and a robe, with kinran (lacquered and gilded paper) and raised embroidery detail: Japan, mid-Meiji era, 1884 - 1899

Physical description

Cream silk with embroidered design of a female dancer performing 'Kocho'. Cream silk lined with orange silk; front attached to lining by flat 0.5xm wide woven gold tape passed through both layers of silk through slits, and knotted at each corner butterfly wings embroidered in a method similar to Chinese kesi technique.
