Description

Piece of wood, described as being ‘taken’ from the tomb of Muhammad Ahmed bin Abd Allah (The Mahdi), possibly by Captain John George Rennie, after the Battle of Omdurman, 2 September 1898, during the reconquest of Sudan, North Africa. Later modified with a silver mount and presented to Major General Andrew Wauchope

Piece of dark brown wood mounted in silver, parts raised in the shape of pyramids, encased in brown leather, and topped with a silver plaque that is inscribed: 'This piece of wood was taken / from the Mahdi's Tomb at Omdurman / Sept 1898 / J.G.R.'.
