Order your Gift Membership by 11 December to ensure you receive it in time for the big day. Please note, this date may be impacted if there is a postal strike during the run up to Christmas, but please see the FAQ section below for how the recipient can access their Member benefits immediately after purchase in case there is a delay.

Family Membership

Family Membership is for 2 adults and 3 children under the age of 16, or 1 adult and 4 children; cards issued for the adults only. Under 5s go free at National Museum of Flight, National Museum of Rural Life and National War Museum.

Joint Membership

Joint Membership is for two named friends or family members to visit together or separately, each with their own card.

Guest Membership

Guest Membership is for a named individual to bring along any guest.

Individual Membership

Individual Membership is for the named individual on the Membership card.

Full-time Student Membership

Full-time Student Membership is for full-time students. Please include proof of your eligibility with your application.

Disabled Membership

Disabled Membership is for one disabled adult with a carer/companion. This Membership is to encourage access for anyone who is presented with a barrier in visiting our museums due to a disability. Please include proof of your eligibility with your application. More information on eligibility below.

Students and Disabled memberships

Students

This Membership is for anyone in full-time education. We accept the following as proof of concessionary status:

  • Valid Student card
  • TOTUM card (formally NUS)

Disabled

This Membership is for anyone who is presented with a barrier in visiting our museums due to a disability.

The eligibility criteria are kept under review and may be updated from time to time. See below for what we currently accept:

  • PIP (Personal Independence Payment)
  • Disability Working Allowance for over 60s
  • Employment & Support Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Disabled Person’s Tax Credit
  • Blue Badge

Upon joining and in order to validate your Membership, we ask that you please send us a photo/scan of your proof of concessionary status to membershipconcessions@nms.ac.uk. Please note this will only be used to check your eligibility, once your application is complete the data will be destroyed/deleted.

Gift Membership FAQs

What can I expect to receive after buying a Gift Membership?

Gift Membership bought with a one-off card payment:

You will receive a confirmation letter and a Gift Membership activation pack for the recipient, in the post 5-10 working days after purchase.

Immediately after purchase, you will receive a confirmation email which will contain a Gift Membership certificate code. Whilst you wait for the activation pack to arrive this code can be used by the recipient to activate their Membership so they can start accessing their benefits. They can activate their Membership by using the following steps:

  • Visit https://my.nms.ac.uk/donate/contribute1  
  • Select the Membership type
  • Click ‘Add to basket’
  • Click ‘Pay now’
  • In the ‘Gift certificate ID’ box enter the Gift Membership certificate code from the email
  • Select ‘Apply gift certificate’ – this will £0 the amount to pay
  • Read the Privacy Notice
  • Click ‘Checkout’
  • Enter details to create an account
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the activation

Gift Membership bought via Direct Debit:

You will receive a confirmation letter and, depending on where you’ve selected the pack to be sent, a Gift Membership welcome pack within 5-10 working days.

If you have given us the recipients email address they can start to use their Membership immediately to book exhibition tickets, whilst they wait for their welcome pack to arrive. They can do this by using the following steps:

  • Click here to activate the account
  • Enter the email address linked to the Membership (recipient’s email address)
  • The recipient will then receive an email to create their password. Please note this may take 5-10 minutes to come through
  • Once the account has been activated they can book their Member exhibition tickets by logging into their account when prompted.

Can a Gift Membership be used immediately after purchase to book Member tickets to the National Museum of Flight or the National Museum of Rural Life?

Not at present, but they will be able to soon. In the meantime, if they would like to book tickets before their cards have arrived, please email the Membership team and we can send you an email which can be used as proof of Membership across our museums.

Can the Gift Membership pack be sent directly to the recipient?

When you purchase a Gift Membership via Direct Debit you can select who you would like the pack to be sent to, whether that be yourself or directly to the recipient.

If you purchase a Gift Membership via card online or cash/ card at one of our ticket desks onsite, the Gift Membership pack will automatically be sent to you. If you would like the activation pack to go directly to the recipient please get in touch with the Membership team at membership@nms.ac.uk or 0131 247 4294.

Gift Membership brought by Direct Debit
