Sheath

Description

Wooden sheath for a sword (mandau or parang ilang), partly carved, ornamented with bands and tufts of coloured hair and fastened with plaited brass wire, and bindings of red flannel, decorated with bands and tassels of beads, and a toggle of the upper mandible of the hornbill: Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Borneo, Sarawak, Kayan, mid - late 19th century

Physical description

Wood, carved in part, and ornamented with bands and tufts of coloured hair, fastened with plaited brass wire; a knife having along wooden handle is carried in a red flannel at the back of sheath, and attached are bindings of red flannel, decorated with bands and tassels of beads, and a toggle of the upper mandible of the hornbill.
