Description

Woman's shawl, woven in wool and silk, in gauze or leno weave with crossing stripes, printed with a detailed design derived from Indian and Middle Eastern motifs, predominantly in brown, red, purple and green, including repeating palm tree motifs and long buta cones at each end: British, Edinburgh or Paisley, c. 1845 - 1855

Physical description

Plaid sized summer shawl of leno weave with checks of silk to keep the ground firm. Selvedges down the long sides and hand knotted fringed short ends. The design consists of very deep end borders of 6 large hooked green cones filled with stylised flowers in yellow, and separated by flowers and cones in yellow, blue-purple and red. Side borders of cones in yellow on alternate white and green labels, surrounded by red and maroon. Centre is filled by vertical bands of alternating yellow stylised flowers and a trailing palm tree pattern.
